My mum, Pauline Hebb (nee Cunliffe) shared this great memory:
The Day I Met the Queen:
Well, actually she wasn't that Queen at the time. She was Princess
Elizabeth, future Queen.
The year was 1944 ****. I was serving in the WRNS in Scotland in a Fleet Air Arm
(NAS) Station.
At breakfast in the mess a senior officer came in and asked for volunteers. It was so secret she didn't tell us where we were going or what we were had to do. "Just wear your 'tiddleysuits', make sure everything was clean and pressed - clean fingernails etc." Also we weren't on duty that day.
About 12 or 13 of us
were loaded onto a bus and taken to the shipyards at Clydebank. Then
we were told we were to be part of the Guard of Honour as Princess
Elizabeth launched the HMS Vanguard. Later she inspected the Guard
and spoke a few words to some of us, and shook our hands.
